One of the very first recipes I ever made as a newly domesticated wife was from my Grandmother.

Sooo sweet, right?  Except for the fact that my Grandmother was a terrible cook.

In in act of insane marital bliss, I chose her “Six Can Casserole” as my chefly debut.  Gonna impress the Hubster of mine, right?  Wrong.

Ladies, bask in this culinary brilliance:

  • 2 cans of boned chicken (betcha didn’t know chicken came in cans!)
  • 1 can of cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can of chicken noodle soup
  • 1 can of chow mein noodles
  • 1 small can of evaporated milk
  • Shredded cheddar cheese  (which doesn’t come in cans, so really shouldn’t be in the recipe…)

Now, combine all these in a dish, sprinkle with cheddar cheese and bake at 350 for 30-minutes.

What’s that?

You’re retching???

Yeah.  Cameron agreed.  It remains the only recipe in the  history of our 16-year marriage that he has BANNED me from ever making again.

I’d like to think that I have progressed in my ability to choose and cook healthy meals for my family.

But, it’s been a long hard slog.

A slog I’d like you to skip right over. 

I’m pretty sure I would have avoided that recipe in 2000 if the Internet and I had been better friends.  #blamegame

But you, my friend, you have access to things I would have joyfully wept over.

Things like Healthy Kids.

As a favor to my younger self (and your husband’s stomach), let me share a few things I wish I had known prior to purchasing my first can of chicken. 

The Key to Healthy Meal Planning Is…

The key to making healthy meals is healthy meal planning.  

Unless you’re Rachael Ray, you’re not going to sit down and whip up a healthy and delicious meal on the fly.

My fanciest “on the fly” meal is ramen.  My brain needs a healthy recipe to follow, otherwise I may be swayed into the “ease” of unhealthy options!

The problem with planning is that you have to sit down and plan.   That means time.  The ONE thing that we are all, as mothers, severely lacking.

So when Mandy introduced me to Healthy Kids, that was something I was looking for.  Can this help me cut down on that planning time?  Let’s see how they did.

Things to Love About Healthy Kids

There are several things about Healthy Kids, that I found worthy of happy clicks:

  • The system is drag-and-drop.  Find a recipe you want to try, then drag it to the date you want to make it.
  • There’s a shopping list automatically created.  Just print and head out the door.
  • There are videos with every recipe, so you can visually see a real chef walk you through the steps.
  • The recipes are a combination of new flavors and old favorites. (No cream of mushroom here!)
  • There are recipes for every family – from the regular meat & potatoes, to gluten-free, nut-free and vegetarian.
  • It’s a great planner if you’re still working to lose those baby pounds.  All the recipes have their nutritional information listed.

Just clicking, dragging, and printing – cuts your healthy meal planning time in half!

  1. Choose through a variety of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
  2. Drag them over to your calendar to organize what you’ll be making and when.
  3. Print off the automatic shopping list, check off the items you already have, and head to the store!

It took me a whopping 6 minutes, 28 seconds to go through the whole process, start to finish.  (Yes, I timed myself for the purpose of this article.)

Running the Numbers

The shopping cost for my Six Can Casserole disaster was about $11.88.

A one-year membership at Healthy Kids costs $5.58 a month.  (Or $10 for a single month membership.)

So you can either head to the store RIGHT NOW, make this infamous Six-Can Casserole recipe, and promptly toss it straight into the trash (because no one is going to eat it).
